Multiple sclerosis – using patient data, optimising therapies

Large medical data sets are essential for understanding and treating multiple sclerosis. This film shows how the best possible treatment decisions can be made for patients.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that affects more than 250,000 people in Germany. MS can lead to very different symptoms and its progression is difficult to predict. It is often only at an advanced stage of the disease that it becomes clear which medication is best suited to the treatment of the individual patient.

Various drugs are currently available for the immunotherapy of MS, which differ in terms of their effectiveness and side effects. The medical informatics initiative funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research aims to create the conditions for making the best possible treatment decisions in the future directly at the onset of the disease and based on a broad range of data through standardised and cross-site data collection.
